Bay Area Teen Idol program helps contestants later in life
COOS BAY, Ore. -- It started with 11 contestants. Now, the Bay Area Teen Idol competition has five people still standing.
The contestants this year have performed music from Broadway to big band to country.
Event director Stephanie Kilmer said the variety of music challenges the contestants to step out of their musical comfort zone and helps develop their singing skills.
"We have kids that have gone on,” she added, “one's performing on Broadway, one teaches vocally at a private institution in Portland. So, it gives the kids and participants an experience that will help them way down the road."
The semifinals are next Tuesday during the Blackberry Arts Festival.
The program wraps up with the finals on September 17.
