NORTH BEND, Ore. -- The 55th Annual Gem and Mineral Show opened its door Friday morning in North Bend, welcoming rock enthusiasts of all ages.

This year's event is taking place at North Bend Community Center.

Opening day featured gemstones, jewelry and several demonstrations along with rough and polished rocks.

One rock enthusiast from Myrtle Point wanted to show her family to what a rock show is all about and how it can be a fun and enjoyable family outing.

"We have family visiting that had never been to a rock show and I love rocks,” said Joan Beaver of Myrtle Point. “Rocks to me are like people, so each is individual. “What brings me every year is I like to see the table, to see how they have the food made from rocks."

The Gem and Mineral Show is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is a dollar and free for children under 12.
