A third gender option is coming to Oregon driver licenses

Starting this July, Oregonians will no longer have to choose between male or female as their gender identity at the DMV.

'Not specified' will be the third option.

Starting Monday, July 3 the choice to not identify with a gender will be an option when obtaining, renewing, or replacing a driver's license, instruction permit, or ID card.

An 'X' will appear on the card instead of an 'M' or an 'F.'

The Oregon Transportation Commission approved the new administrative rules Thursday. The change came about after an Oregon resident fought to change their identity from female to "non-binary."

Anyone wishing to make a change more than a year before their renewal date, will be charged a replacement fee.
