Additional mental health therapists now providing services to Coos County schools

COOS BAY, Ore. -- Students in Coos County will be getting some help with the addition of more mental health therapists in local schools.

There are now five mental health therapists providing services to the Bandon, Coquille and Coos Bay school districts.

According to Coos Health and Wellness, the program is helpful for students and their families and the kids don't have to leave school to attend a session.

"I think that a lot of students do have depression; we see depression in young ages, too, so we'll see depression in an 8-year-old, so if we're right there to do that therapy we can intervene and start doing some work with that child and helping them with the depression,” explains Shawna Schaar with Coos Health and Wellness. “We can also do family therapy if the parent wants to come in."

The Coos Bay School District now has a mental health therapist in each of its buildings, including Blossom Gulch and Madison, thanks to a collaboration with the Waterfall Clinic.

"If we can do it sooner, we can have them to come to terms with trauma and be more trauma-informed,” says Lisa Desalvio with Coos Bay School District. “We have parents that are truly struggling and are asking for help too."

Coos Health and Wellness is hoping to bring on two more therapists to serve schools in Powers and Myrtle Point.
