PORTLAND, Ore. - A dog looking out a window at a Rock Creek apartment complex may have saved a two-year-old boy's life on Friday.
The black lab and golden retriever mix named Lucy began barking when she noticed the child was wandering toward a pond by himself. Lucy's owner, Kerri Cooper, went to the window and saw the child.
"She was definitely alerting me that something was going on. She was definitely upset," Cooper said.
By the time Cooper went outside and grabbed him, the boy was neck-deep in the pond, according to Washington County Sgt. David Thompson.
"I'm glad I got there in time. A couple minutes later, he's under, 100 percent," said Cooper. "You always think someone's going to be watching, when I realized I was the only one I knew I needed to step in, no one else."
Cooper, 23, took the boy to the office at the Rock Creek 185 complex and called 911. While deputies were on their way, the boy's grandmother came into the office looking for him, Thompson said.
Deputies later arrested 58-year-old Rochelle Huegli on charges of child neglect and criminal mistreatment. Thompson said Huegli had been drinking during the day and was asleep when her grandson wandered outside.
The boy's parents came and picked him up.
"There is no doubt that due to her attentive dog, and her quick actions, Ms. Cooper saved the life of the young boy," said Thompson in a news release.
