Coos Bay turns out for Mingus Park celebration
COOS BAY, Ore. -- It was a party in the park this Fourth of July in Coos Bay at Mingus Park hosted its annual celebration.
The annual event included the popular Mayor's Firecracker Run and plenty of activities for families.
Coos Bay Mayor Joe Benetti talked about the meaning of Independence Day and the local celebration.
"The true meaning of the Fourth is to recognize what we have and we're fortunate to have and it's a celebration of that,” the mayor said, “I think this is a small part that we can participate with having a family activity in the park and letting everyone enjoy everything."
For some who participated in Tuesday's activities, the significance of the day was front and center in their mind.
"I get kind of emotional about it, but the National Anthem says, “the home of the free, land of the brave,” and that did not come free,” said Pam Sichtang of Douglas County. “We have people that sacrificed for our freedom so this is a day to celebrate those and to think about those who are still keeping that ability for us.”
The traditional Fourth of July festivities include a fireworks display on the Coos Bay Waterfront.
