Coos Bay files lawsuit over restrictive flood area regulations
COOS BAY, Ore. - The City of Coos Bay is suing the National Marine Fisheries Service over restrictive flood area regulations.
The lawsuit is over the Federal Government's proposal to put high-risk flood plains off limits to development in order to protect endangered species like salmon.
A major part of Coos Bay falls within the flood plan, and the city says that businesses and projects are being developed and the government's proposal is threatening to Coos Bay's economic growth.
"We don't believe that the federal government has the authority, specifically the National Marine Fishery service, has the legal authority to require new flood plain zone requirements or placing of land-use requirements," said Roger Craddock, the Coos Bay City Manager.
Craddock says the city is now waiting for a reply to its lawsuit.
