Coos Bay lectures educate public on Cascadia Subduction Zone
COOS BAY, Ore. – The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a hot topic in Coos County and lectures are helping residents learn what to expect and how to be prepared.
The Coos Bay Fire Department and Coos County Emergency Management will hold a class to explain the science of how the subduction zone works. They also discuss the history of great earthquakes in the pacific northwest.
“Our parents or grandparents or even great grandparents weren't alive the last time we had a large earthquake here in Oregon,” said Chief Mark Anderson from Coos Bay Fire Department. “So it's important for us to educate people because it's not in recent memory and so we're not really prepared or at least not mentally prepared for something that we just don't know.”
The training will take place at the Coos Bay Fire department Friday, May 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
