Coos Bay proceeds with plan to clean up illegal homeless camps
COOS BAY, Ore. -- The City of Coos Bay is moving forward with plans to clean up illegal homeless camps around the city.
The targeted camps are mostly in the Empire area.
Coos Bay Police Chief Gary McCullough says sanitary conditions and rising crime are what prompted the decision, and he says it's more than just a cleanup.
Different area agencies and departments around the county are brainstorming ways to help the homeless.
"We know once we clean their camp up that they’re going to have to move somewhere, so trying to identify who the homeless are and if we can identify some services we can offer to assist them to kind of get back on their feet," McCullough said.
The cleanup is scheduled for March 28 and 29.
