Coos County might house Curry County inmates

COOS COUNTY, Ore. -- Curry County commissioners are working on an agreement to rent jail beds from the Coos County Jail.

Coos County Commissioner Bob Main says Curry County wants to rent at least three beds in the event a tax levy does not pass during a special election next month.

Main says if the beds are rented, it will not cause overcrowding at the county jail. "We do have several pods that are empty," said Main. "We have jail capacity of 250, our maximum capacity, but due to staffing is 98. So, we do have the capacity to enlarge and expand."

According to the Curry County Sheriff's office, if the tax levy is turned down the county jail will close, deputies will be laid off and only serious cases will be prosecuted.
