Driver OK after boulders hit car on I-84; rock slide closes interstate

HOOD RIVER, Ore. - A driver escaped injury when a rock slide sent boulders tumbling on Interstate 84, hitting his car.

The 54-year-old driver was eastbound on Interstate 84 when the slide sent debris across the road just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Oregon DOT closed I-84 eastbound from Troutdale to 3 miles west of Hood River.

The stretch of interstate will be closed through the weekend, ODOT said.

"That is a lot of rock and it is not going to clean up quickly," Kimberly Dinwiddie with ODOT said. "We want to make sure the highway is safe before we open it."

Alternate routes are:

I-205 north to Washington state SR14 eastbound to Hood River Bridge back to I-84.

U.S. 26 (Mount Hood Highway) eastbound to OR 35 north to I-84 in Hood River.

"These highways are icy in spots, so please exercise caution: slow down and leave more room between cars. Please expect delays and slow-moving trucks," ODOT said in a news release.
