Eugene Police locate psychiatric patient who escaped custody of Oregon State Hospital

EUGENE, Ore. - A psychiatric patients found guilty except for insanity on assault and weapons charges who escaped custody of the Oregon State Hospital while in Eugene on Thursday is back in custody.

Eugene Police located the patient around 9 a.m. Friday, the Oregon Health Authority said.

The man is a patient at the Junction City campus of the state hospital. He ran off while attending a treatment session in Eugene just before 2 p.m. Thursday, the Health Authority said.

"Two Oregon State Hospital staff members assigned to escort Wickham lost visual contact when he ran off from the group," the agency said in a statement.

The state said it will conduct an investigation into how the man managed to escape.

"As in all incidents, the hospital will review all the circumstances leading up to the event to determine what went wrong and prevent it from happening again," the Health Authority said in a statement.
