Gold Beach woman swept away, drowned by Rogue River
GOLD BEACH, Ore. - A woman retrieving a frisbee got swept away and drowned by the Rogue River on Monday afternoon.
Cherie Jarnigan, 38, went under while retrieving the toy from the water Monday, the Curry County Sheriff's Office said.
Both a friend and a bystander tried to save her, to no avail.
Rescuers eventually pulled her from the river and rushed her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Search and rescue workers remind you to be prepared with life jackets when you go to the river.
"Usually it's best to try and throw something out to them, something that floats - a line or anything like that," said Sgt. Will Coleman with the Coos County Sheriff's Office. "Usually the last resort is actually going in after them because it takes a very special skill and training to deal with somebody like that."
Coleman said knowing techniques like CPR can go a long way in saving someone's life.
