COOS BAY, Ore. -- Heads-up, Coos Bay motorists!

Be sure to watch out for pedestrians as the Coos Bay Police Department conducts a crosswalk safety operation this Thursday, August 10.

It will be at at the intersection of Newmark Avenue and Morrison Street from 8-11 a.m.

Officers say decoy pedestrian will cross the street while police watch for violations.

The police chief says they've received complaints in the past about safety in that area.

"We've been doing it for 3 or 4 years now, and it shows improvement right after we do these operations," Chief Gary McCullough says. "Our complaints go down and, as it gets further in between them, they start coming back up again, so that's why we continue to do them on a yearly basis. We try to move [the operations] throughout the city because there are a lot of crosswalks."

McCullough says this is the first in a series of safety operations this summer.

Three more will take place this month and another in September.
