Hollering Place: Two proposals in the works, city to decide
COOS BAY, Ore. -- Two groups have submitted their proposals for the Hollering Place project, and now the city needs to decide who gets it.
It's now up to the city's Urban Renewal Agency to decide between a hotel proposed by the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, or a fish processing plant proposed by Oregon Seafoods.
Bob Garcia, the chairman of the tribe, says they have a history there. "They were the ones who were originally "hollering" at the Hollering Place thousands of years ago," he said.
He adds that above all, it will boost the economy. "It's going to create jobs, it's going to create income from the community, it's going to create tax revenue for the city so it's something that is a win-win," he said.
Mike Babcock, the owner of Oregon Seafoods says not only will his proposal also bring jobs, but the water front property is ideal for commercial and industrial use.
He wants to have a processing plant where people would be able to go and observe the process, and then eat at the eatery. "A way for people to go in and view the processing area from, let's say, a second floor mezzanine, and actually get an idea of how the seafood is processed and how we put it together," he said.
Coos Bay City Manager Roger Craddock says the Urban Renewal Agency is set to hear presentations from the two groups at Tuesday's meeting at city hall.
The meeting starts at 8:00 pm, and they will also receive public comments.
They say they might pick one of the two proposals at the meeting and begin the negotiation process.
If it doesn't happen at Tuesday's meeting, it will happen at the next meeting in two weeks.
