January unemployment rates lowest in over 25 years on south coast
COOS COUNTY -- Things are looking up for jobs on the south coast.
January unemployment rates were the lowest in over 25 years.
In Coos County, January’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.7 percent, down from 6.2 percent in December.
In Curry County, that rate clocked in at 6.3 percent, down from 6.8 percent in December.
The last time a January unemployment rate was this low was before 1990.
Regional economist Annette Shelton-Tiderman says even though no new jobs were added, there's a reason why unemployment continues to go down.
"We have an older workforce; people who might have wanted to retire, but the economy was just a little too tight, they're retiring now. So I believe that we are seeing people who have been looking for work, moving into these recently vacated positions."
Shelton-Tiderman says she believes employment will likely increase in the springtime.
