COOS BAY, Ore. -- At a time when so many businesses are struggling in the down economy, an arcade in Coos Bay is celebrating one year in business.
Joey Harper opened Joey's Arcade on Central Ave. just one year ago.
He says he owes his success to a grant from the city, his "Sunday Fundays" and the support of the community.
It has allowed him to pay the bills, but he says it's not really about the money.
"If you really feel like you need to make a huge income right now, I wish you the best, but this isn't the economy to do it in," Harper said.
He says even in a slumping economy, people still need to have fun.
"We're just trying to provide a value budget, fun, alternative for people to be together and hang out and feel like they don't have to be in a bar atmosphere to do it," Harper said.
Joey sees promise for businesses in Coos Bay's downtown streets, and bringing attention to the area will only help them thrive.
Mayor of Coos Bay, Crystal Shoji, says, "I think the future of downtown will be what we make it and our city can make a better downtown by enjoying it."
With one year behind him, Joey says he's not going anywhere.
