Kids shoot for the stars at Space Summer Camp in Roseburg

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - Children all across Douglas County are learning some new lessons, and many people might think that they're out of this world.

These middle schoolers in Roseburg have a big job this week, designing a mission to Mars. They're doing it with the help of their instructors at the Space Exploration and Rocketry Summer Camp at Cobb School.

"I had a really big interest in rockets and planes and all that sorts of stuff," said Cody Dudly, a student at the camp.

The four-day camp is sponsored by NASA, and it teaches kids problem solving, physics and critical thinking.

"The hands go up in the air, just full of involvement the whole week," said Holda Crocker, the head of Cobb School. "It's just been really great to watch."

The kids are also learning about different careers that their skills can be used for.

"It's not just NASA," said Crocker. "It's all of those other corporations that are trying to build rockets too. So that space industry is really emerging, and it would be great if these guys could be apart of it."

Crocker, who has a background in mechanical engineering, hopes that more girls will join the program as well.

"We're realizing that we're going to have to do some things differently, even before age nine, to make sure that girls feel excited, and welcomed and interested or know what it is," said Crocker.

As for Dudley, he says the camp has inspired him to chase his dreams.

"Researching chemicals, because I'm really interested in chemistry," said Dudley. "I think if we can find interesting fuels that will work better than what we currently have, that would be an interesting job."

There will be another Space Exploration and Rocketry camp in Yoncalla, so more kids can shoot for the stars.
