Mystery solved: Missing headstone to return to Coos Bay in June

The headstone of Joseph and Clara Bailey, great grandchildren of Lane County's Joseph Lane, rested in the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery until it was taken last year.

COOS BAY, Ore. - The mystery of vandalism in a Coos Bay Community Cemetery has finally been solved.

The headstone of Joseph and Clara Bailey, great grandchildren of Lane County's Joseph Lane, rested in the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery until it was taken last year.

The headstone was found in San Francisco, California.

Volunteers who take care of the cemetery say they're relieved to know where this piece of history ended up.

"Looked over and that was a really significant headstone," said Cricket Soules, a cemetery volunteer. "That was really surprising that it was located, I was always optimistic."

Soules isn't the only volunteer who wants to see the safe return of the missing headstone.

"It was crazy that it went that far, and I hoped it would be in one piece, still in tact," said Jonas Langarcia, a student volunteer. "I'd definitely love to see it back in its spot."

Charges will not be pressed in the case, and the headstone will be back in Coos Bay in June.
