Old cat's barn is on the move, E I E I O!
TANGENT, Ore. - A barn in Tangent that was left to a cat when it's owner died may have nine lives of its own.
John Bass' barn became famous when it was bestowed it to his beloved pet cat named "Kitty Kat" when Bass died in 1983. Bass also willed enough money to keep both the barn and feline maintained for the rest of its life.
Kitty Kat died in 1993 and the funding for upkeep has long since run out. Fast-forward almost another 10 years and the City of Tangent could no longer afford to pay for it.
On Sunday the barn was moved inch by inch on a truck bed to its new site on a neighbors' property. For many Tangent residents the barn has been a staple landmark for their community.
"You try to preserve that ... and I think it's very important," said Tangent resident Lora Novak.
Neighbor Beth Timmons offered to pick up the tab to move the barn across the street to her property, knowing that years of local history made the move as well.
"I just like how many new friends, new relationships we've made with this and I think that it's just going to continue on," Timmons said. "I'm really excited now."
While much of Saturday and Sunday was spent moving the barn, the relocation won't be completed until a new foundation is built underneath the structure.
