OSP: Oversize load strikes bridge, driver cited

COOS BAY, Ore. -- A Myrtle Point man was cited Wednesday afternoon, after state police say his oversize load struck and damaged a bridge.

Oregon State Police were called to the Chandler Bridge on Highway 241 just before 12:30 pm, after reports came in about the accident.

Authorities say Richard A. Hawkins, 57, of Myrtle Point, was driving a 2005 Kenworth truck pulling a trailer loaded with an oversize John Deere Timber De-limber southbound crossing the Chandler Bridge, when an unsecured boom at the rear of the equipment load struck at least two spans of the bridge.

Officials say the impact bent the spans.

Hawkins was cited by state police for Unsafe Loading of Heavy Equipment, Exceeding Maximum Height and Failure to Obtain a Variance Permit for an Oversized Load.

A team of ODOT bridge inspectors and engineers from Roseburg inspected the damage and determined it was safe for travel.
