Police: Man arrested for strangling roommate's Doberman

EUGENE, Ore. -- Police arrested a man Thursday night after they say he beat and strangled his roommate's dog.

Officials said James Harold Martin, 26, faces first-degree animal abuse charges after he allegedly killed the dog.

Police said Martin's roommate found the injured miniature Doberman named Maggie, and took her to an animal hospital. Veterinarians later pronounced Maggie dead.

Martin is being held in the Lane County Jail on a felony charge of aggravated animal abuse.

Authorities told our news staff that if found guilty, Martin could face up to five years in prison.
