Police: Roseburg man arrested after crime spree, setting stolen car on fire
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A Roseburg man was arrested after stealing a truck and setting it on fire - and a whole host of other incidents early Thursday morning that authorities described as a "crime spree," Roseburg Police said.
Around 1:30 a.m. Roseburg Police officers responded Winter Street to investigate a report of a suspicious man seen entering vehicles and opening mailboxes in the area. But responding units were unable to locate the man.
At around 2:40 a.m., police were dispatched to a reported stolen vehicle from Four Seasons Drive, a few blocks away from Winter Street. Investigation revealed an unlocked white '94 Mazda B300 pickup had been stolen. The victim's other car had been entered and gone through as well, police said.
At around 9:15 a.m., police responded to Emerald Street after it was reported a man was running through back yards and going though outbuildings and garages. The suspect additionally forced a door open to a residence in the 1900 block of NE Stephens and rummaged through the house, police said.
At the same time a vehicle fire was reported at NE Stephens and Emerald. The caller followed the suspect on foot and the suspect allegedly tried to attack the reporting person wearing a pair of brass knuckles, the report said. The reporting person advised they last saw the suspect walking in the Lithia Dodge lot.
Roseburg Police responded to Lithia and detained the suspect, 33-year-old John Brouk.
Police learned the burning vehicle at NE Stephens and Emerald was the aforementioned stolen Mazda, the report said. Investigation revealed Brouk allegedly stole the Mazda and set in on fire, and allegedly entered multiple vehicles, outbuildings, garages, and the aforementioned residence.
Brouk was charged with the following crimes and lodged at the Douglas County Jail:
- Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle
- Arson 2
- Unauthorized Entry into a Motor Vehicle (two counts)
- Criminal Trespass 2 (two counts)
- Attempted Assault 2
- Attempted Unauthorized Use of a vehicle
- Burglary 1
