Port of Coos Bay proposes widening Coos Bay Channel
COOS BAY, Ore. – A proposal to deepen and widen the Coos Bay Channel could be a boost to the economy on the south coast.
The Port of Coos Bay is proposing the expansion through its Coos Bay channel modification project.
The project will expand the existing channel from 37 to 45 feet dep and from 300 to 400 fifty feet wide.
According to the port, it’s a key component to helping the community and the region stay competitive to match maritime freight transportation trends.
“Trends over the last decades vessels have been getting larger and larger so in order to stay competitive in maritime shipping we feel it's necessary to deepen our shipping channel and widen it to accommodate the larger vessels,” said Margaret Barber from Port of Coos Bay.
The Port of Coos Bay will hold meetings to give information to the community later in May.
The port estimates construction would start in late 2019 and be completed in 2022.
