Pro chefs from around the country in Coos Bay for Gelato World Cup tryouts
COOS BAY. Ore. -- Professional chefs from around the country are in Coos Bay for the Gelato World Cup tryouts.
Southwestern Oregon Community College and the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute are hosting the event.
The competition included ice carving and gelato making for the chefs who are showcasing their skills and trying to qualify for the 2018 USA Gelato Team.
"We're looking for a well-rounded chef, someone who brings a lot of creativity to the table, some good solid skills, but also someone who wants to work together with the team,” said Oregon Coast Culinary Institute Chef Randy Torres. “We're having students involved here from the college so I'm looking for some members that would help groom our students."
After Fridays competition, the judges chose four members to join the team, including two chefs from North Bend.
"I don't really do lots and lots of competitions so to have done this today is a landmark,” said institute pastry chef instructor Darrell Folck. “It just feels great and to be here with my best friend and teammate is awesome too."
"I’m super excited to be able to represent the US abroad and do competition in Europe and all that; it's always awesome," added Mill Casino Executive Chef Chris Foltz.
The members selected will compete at the Gelato World Cup next year in Italy.
