Sheriff: Driver loses control on icy road, hits school bus full of kids head-on

A driver lost control on an icy road and crashed head-on into a school bus full of children Monday afternoon, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said. (MCSO)

SALEM, Ore. - A driver lost control on an icy road and crashed head-on into a school bus full of children Monday afternoon, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

The kids are OK, the sheriff's office said. Deputies believe the driver of the pickup lost control on ice and crossed into oncoming traffic.

The crash happened on Sunnyview Road NE in an area that doesn't see much sun due to trees, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies offered drivers tips for the cold conditions gripping western Oregon:

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly.
  • Drive Slowly
  • The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds.
  • Know you brakes.
  • Don't power up hills and Don't stop going down hills.
  • If necessary stay at home.
