Sheriff: Roseburg man was DUII, tried to run from cops

COOS BAY, Ore. -- Sheriff's deputies say a Roseburg man was driving drunk before leading authorities on a foot chase in Coos Bay.

Early Saturday morning, the Coos County Sheriff's Office was participating in increased DUII enforcement in support of the holiday weekend.

At about 12:15 a.m. a deputy working the enforcement conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on Barry Road near Hwy 101 in the Bunker Hill District, after officials say it was observed driving erratic and reckless.

When attempting to stop the vehicle, authorities say the driver took off on foot, leading deputies on a short foot chase.

The man, identified as Robert J. Shewey, 29, of Roseburg, was captured and deputies took him into custody.

Shewey was charged by authorities with DUII, felony driving while suspended, reckless driving and attempting to elude on foot.

Officials say Shewey also had two warrants for his arrest.

Deputies say their investigation revealed that the vehicle Shewey had been driving, a 1993 Ford pickup, had also been reported in a hit and run accident reported to the Oregon State Police.

Shewey was transported to the Coos County Jail, where he is being held on the outstanding warrants and a probation violation.
