Sheriff: Woman stole almost $69K over 5 years

BROOKINGS, Ore. -- A 62-year-old office assistant was arrested Tuesday, after authorities say she stole almost $69,000 from a water district over 5 years.

For the last several months, the Curry County Sheriff's office says they have investigated a complaint by the Harbor Water District regarding missing funds.

Officials say Debra Irene Wendt, 62, of Brookings, was working as an office assistant for the water district. They say that between January of 2007 and now, more than $68,986 was taken from the district illegally.

After an investigation, the Sheriff' office says a grand jury handed down indictments for first and second degree theft.

Wendt was taken into custody at her Brookings home by deputies and lodged in the Curry County Jail, the Sheriff's office said.

Wendt's bail was set at $235,000.00.
