COOS BAY, Ore. -- Swimming is helping keep the Mingus Park Pool afloat.

The pool is run by a nonprofit group and later this week they will host the first ever Swim-a-Thon.

Lap swimmers seek pledges to swim per length or people pledging them to swim for an hour.

There will be food, drinks and music at the event in support of the group's efforts in the community.

"I'm hoping that we can raise enough cash that we won't have to worry about the operation for a year,” says pool manager Kathe McNutt. “This is our attempt to raise a little money to help us maintain the programs we have and just trying to keep our heads above water."

The Swim-a-Thon is this Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Mingus Park Swimming Pool.
