Three names added to Lost at Sea Memorial in Charleston at Memorial Day ceremony
CHARLESTON, Ore. -- Heads were held low in Charleston Monday as hundreds gathered for the annual Blessing of the Fleet.
The ceremony honors the lives of local fishermen.
This year three names were added to the Lost at Sea Memorial: Jerry Barkley from the Patty AJ, Raymundo Cardoso from the Sara Jo, and Joshua Paulus from the Eagle III.
"I've been on the committee for 15 years; I can't remember a time when there was this many put on in one year," says Margery Whitmer with the Blessing of the Fleet committee, "so it's been a real hard time for our community and we're healing. And this helps heal. This memorial service helps people heal."
20 names were added to the other memorial plaques in memory of Charleston fishermen and those who worked in the fishing industry.
