Volunteer effort will allow City of Reedsport to assume library operations
REEDSPORT, Ore. -- 10 Douglas County library branches will close on April 1 and some residents are fighting to keep theirs open.
In November, voters turned down a tax measure to keep Douglas County libraries open.
A proposal to keep the library in Reedsport open failed, but now supporters are coming together.
"The City of Reedsport will be assuming responsibility for the Reedsport branch library,” says Reedsport City Manager Jonathan Wright. “This is only made possible through a great volunteer effort. At this point, we are expecting to be able to maintain the business hours that are currently provided to the public, and that's on an ongoing basis we have enough volunteers to fill the time slots that we'll be able to continue with that."
Wright says they hope to put another tax measure on the November ballot.
