Dead body found near the Illinois River Trail

Curry County Sheriff's Office

A body was recovered near the Illinois River Trail on Wedneday.

On Tuesday, Curry County Sheriff's Office received a report that a body was found 3 1/2 miles up the Illinois River Trail past Buzzards Roost.

CCSO's Search and Rescue began to recovery the body from the narrow rugged steep trail.

In the meantime the Sheriff's Office contacted local residents whom where able to ID the victim as 70-year-old Steven Chamberlain.

Chamberlain lived near the Illinois River Trail Head in Agness, Ore.

Neighbors told CCSO that Chamberlain had left his home around 2:00 p.m. the day before to go on an overnight hike and camping trip.

On Wednesday, at 12:30 a.m., SARs arrived at the start of the trail head with Chamberlain. He was later taken to Redwood Memorial in Brookings.

CCSO says it appears that Chamberlain died from natural causes. The initial report suggested that there was no foul play. Next of kin has been notified.

"I would like to publicly thank each of the SAR members and Deputies who assisted in this very difficult recovery. The Illinois River Trail is not well maintained and the terrain was rugged, narrow and steep. Without these dedicated men and women to do these difficult things, there would be no closure for the families. My hat is off to these un-paid professional SAR members, Curry County Sheriff John Ward said.
