FEMA: Some homeowners may have to buy more insurance
COOS COUNTY, Ore. -- If you live in a floodplain, you could soon be required to purchase more insurance.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) might be updating the flood insurance rate maps in Coos County.
These maps show the floodplains and flood hazard areas.
If the maps are changed, your property could become a hazard area.
Living within or outside of a hazard area determines if you need to buy floodplain insurance or not.
Your property could also be deemed a non-hazard area, or there could be no change at all.
The maps are up for review and public comments.
There will be an open house in Coquille on April 8 to discuss the possible changes.
