BROOKINGS, Ore. - A wave swept a Nevada man out to sea Wednesday morning, Oregon State Police said.

Christopher M. Kareck, 21, of Sparks, Nevada, was swept off some rocks into the ocean near the Indian Sands Trail, police said. A traveling companion identified him to police.

State police from Gold Beach responded at 10:35 a.m., along with the U.S. Coast Guard.

"The search effort, which is still underway, is expected to continue until sunset or when conditions no longer safely allow," police said in a statement.

Large, unpredictable "sneaker waves" pose a deadly hazard on the Oregon Coast in fall and winter.
