Beaver Football: Spring has sprung at OSU

From 3-9 to 9-4 with a loss to Texas in the Alamo Bowl, the Beavers are out to build upon the largest one year turnaround in program history with the start of Spring practice.

The Beavers look to replace three starters on offense and four on defense. Those departures include All-Americans Markus Wheaton at wide receiver and cornerback Jordan Poyer who are preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft.

" we are losing two of the best players we have ever had, two of the most productive players so who is going to make those plays? How are we going to get all of those yards? How are we going to get all of those plays that Jordan was making defensively?," head coach Mike Riley questioned as he enters his 13th season in Corvallis.

That is where Stephen Nelson steps in. The junior college transfer from the College of the Sequoias.

"He'll definitely be in the mix we don't recruit junior college players to redshirt, we'd rather them come in to compete right away and that's why he is here," Riley said of the juco corner who will wear #7.

Some new faces are also old faces. Like new graduate assistants Kyle DeVan and Lyle Moevao.

Moevao last played for the Beavers in 2009 and can offer an interesting take on the starting quarterback battle between Sean Mannion and Cody Vaz since he went through the same type of deal a few years back with Sean Canfield.

"It is really just to get myself prepared, to get yourself prepared so that we can help the team. So that is the main concept that I am trying to get to Cody and Sean, which they look like they are doing a great job of handling," Moevao who went 11-4 as a started said.

The beavers won't break out their new uniforms until the season opener on August 31st against Eastern Washington at Reser Stadium.

The first day for the players to meet with the media this Spring will be on Tuesday for day two of the 15 workouts that culminate in the 'Spring Showcase' on Friday April 26th.
