Mullens on Kelly returning: 'We're ecstatic'

EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens confirmed on Monday that Chip Kelly will remain the head coach of the Ducks football team.

"I think we have something very special here," said Mullens about Kelly's decision. "It's a great place, we have a very passionate fan base, we have a unique culture.

"I think it's one of the best jobs in football."

Mullens said Kelly called him on Sunday night to inform him that he was remaining at Oregon. In fact, Mullens said Kelly was upfront with him throughout the whole process of interviewing with NFL teams.

"Chip was a true professional," said Mullens. Whether it was last year ore this year, he manages everything exactly the right way. I was in the loop all the way."

If Kelly had decided to leave, Mullens said he was prepared to conduct a coaching search.

When asked if Kelly was here to stay for good, Mullens said, "When you're 46-7 in four years, you're going to draw a lot of attention."
