Prefontaine immortalized in Coos Bay

An outline of the mural of Steve Prefontaine to be painted in downtown Coos Bay.

Steve Prefontaine, a legendary distance runner from Coos Bay, will now be immortalized in downtown Coos Bay.

A mural of “Pre” will be painted on a building on South Broadway.

Coos Bay city officials say the area known as Pedway will be known now as “Pre Way.”

Selection for the mural design was made by Pre’s sister, Linda Prefontaine, and the Prefontaine foundation. The mural will show Pre running at Marshfield High School, as well as at the University of Oregon.

City officials say that they’ve been working on the project for more than a year.

"It's been a fun project," said Tom Dixon of the Community Development Administration. "I think that the community will be really proud of the final product and to honor the native son that made Coos Bay famous."

To goal is to finish the mural in time for the Prefontaine Memorial Run on September 16.
