Philomath advances to 4A semis

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Ben DeSaulnier had 25 points and Derek Nash added 22 to lead Philomath to a 54-47 victory over North Bend in the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 4A boys tournament on Tuesday.

Philomath (18-5) will face top-ranked Cascade (25-1) and La Salle Prep (25-2) will play undefeated North Valley (25-0) in the semifinals on Thursday at Gill Coliseum.

DeSaulnier and Nash each hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Philomath a 15-12 lead in the second quarter.

But North Bend rallied in the fourth, narrowing it to 47-46 on Ty Roane's 3-pointer with 56 points remaining. Philomath made seven free throws during the final 30 seconds to seal it.

Roane led No. 5 North Bend (20-3) with 16 points.

Cascade will play in the semifinals for the first time since 1998 after rallying from behind to beat Elmira 50-41 the earlier quarterfinal.

The Cougars trailed 31-23 in the third quarter but went on a 12-3 run to take a 35-34 lead. Cascade extended the lead to 41-35 after an 8-1 fourth-quarter run.

Orion Wright finished with 23 points for the Cougars while ninth-ranked Elmira (18-7) was led by Jessep Fay with 16 points.

Ian Johnson and Jacob McGraw each scored nine points in third-ranked La Salle's 36-27 victory over Gladstone (14-10).

The Falcons, who last won a state title in 1986, jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first quarter but was ahead only 15-13 at the half. Ryan Gibson's jumper briefly gave Gladstone a 19-17 lead, but Johnson answered with a 3-pointer and La Salle led the rest of the way.

Michael Stout had eight points for No. 15 Gladstone, which lost twice to La Salle in the regular season.

In the late game Tuesday, Sutherlin led 10-8 after the first quarter but then quickly fell behind, outscored by second-ranked North Valley 19-9 in the second and the Knights cruised the rest of the way for a 70-48 victory.

Kevin Brazille had 20 points, including three 3-pointers, for North Valley, which led by as many as 28 points in the last period. J.J. Chirnside added 18 points and nine rebounds.

Talen Jensen had 14 points and Derrik Wattman finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for No. 8 Sutherlin (19-8).
