Astoria groups organize food pantry after Coast Guard members don't get paychecks

    ASTORIA, Ore. – Tuesday is the first day U.S. Coast Guard members are not getting their paychecks.

    The Coast Guard is the only branch of the military not funded by the Department of Defense.

    Top help, Boy Scout Troop 211 and MOMS Club of Astoria are holding a special food pantry Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge in Astoria.

    Be The Light Food Pantry is intended to benefit all active duty Coast Guard members and their families, Coast Guard Retirees and furloughed federal workers impacted by the partial government shutdown.

    Anyone interested in visiting the pantry should bring a grocery bag and government identification.

    Any donations that are not used will be donated to local food pantries.
