"Certainly, the monetary cost is nothing compared to the cost of taking someones life."

A taxi fare will cost thousands of dollars less than a DUII, even a long ride. From Springfield to Highway 99, for instance, the ride costs around $35.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - DUII's are not just a safety issue, but they'll cost you too.

In Springfield, a first-time DUII arrest will send you to the Springfield Jail, with a bail of $1,500. If it's a second offense, or your blood alcohol level is high enough, then that bail gets bumped up to $2,500.

Officer Tom Speldrich, with the Springfield Police, say that all of the additional fees can bring the total cost up to thousands of dollars.

"Fees rating to attorney's fees, relating to court costs, your insurance is probably going to go up," said Speldrich. "Certainly, the monetary cost is nothing compared to the cost of taking someones life."

Officer Speldrich says that the best way to avoid a DUII is to be prepared, and have a designated driver or plan to stay overnight. It is also helpful to have a taxi company's number saved in your phone.
