COOS BAY, Ore. -- The City of Coos Bay is looking into what caused another malfunction this week at the wastewater treatment plant on Fulton Avenue.

City officials don't know how long it will take to get the plant back in balance.

Because of the potential harm to people and the environment, the issue was reported to the Department of Environmental Quality.

City officials are recommending you check with the Department of Agriculture or Coos Public Health before harvesting shellfish.

"We are looking at the microorganisms through a microscope,” says wastewater project engineer Jennifer Wirsing, “we’re ensuring the microorganism are happy, for lack of a better word, and what we are seeing is a positive trend towards that."

The City is building a new treatment plant to replace the plant on Fulton Avenue.

The new plant is set to be completed in December, 2018.
