COOS BAY, Ore. -- Police in Coos Bay arrested a man reportedly stealing from mailboxes in Coos Bay's Eastwood area, Coos Bay Police Department said.

Around 11:20 Monday morning, police received a 911 call from a man reporting he was observing a young man stealing mail on 9th Ave.

The caller gave a description and advised he was walking south on 9th Ave. in the area of the recent traffic detour.

Police located the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Derek L. Johnson, but he ran from officers, the report said.

Officers located him a few minutes later walking north in the 600 block of 10th Ave., where he again attempted to flee, police said, but he was ultimately taken into custody.

Police say Johnson had a felony warrant for his arrest out of Washington County for failure to appear on a meth possession charge.

Johnson denied any wrongdoing, police said, but the caller positively identified him as the man he observed stealing mail, according to the report.

He was also found to be in possession of stolen mail, the report said, and he was taken into custody.

Police say another resident contacted them and said she observed him on her property, and has recently been experiencing several thefts from her property.

Johnson was transported to the Coos County Jail and booked on charges of mail theft, interfering with an officer, third degree escape, and resisting arrest.

Police suspect that Johnson has stolen mail and other property in the Eastside area of Coos Bay before this incident, and believe he may continue after he is released from jail, police said.

Police are asking the public to keep a watchful eye out for any suspicious activity and to call them if they observe suspicious people wandering around the neighborhood.
