Cougar seen in residential Springfield area

Oregon is home to thousands of cougars. (SBG)

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A cougar was seen in Springfield on Sunday morning by a newspaper carrier near 10th Street and D Street.

The carrier called the Springfield Police, who responded and confirmed the presence of the cougar in the neighborhood. The cougar jumped several fences and was last seen in the 1200-1400 block of the alley between E and F Streets.

Given the density of the population of the city in this area, the SPD contacted the Central Lane 911 Communications for assistance. Residents are urged to be cautious and observant, and supervise their children and pets while outside.

The cougar did not display any aggressive behavior, but residents should contact the police department if they encounter the animal and feel endangered.
