PORTLAND, Ore. – One person died from his injuries after reports of a shooting in Downtown Portland on Sunday night.

Portland Police officers were called out about 5:40 p.m. on reports of gunfire near SW 4th Avenue and Stark Street.

A spokesperson said a man was taken to the hospital and in critical condition, but later died.

Police say he was found hurt inside a parked vehicle.

Investigators detained 24-year-old Aaron Birt and believe he was involved in the incident.

He was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail on one charge of murder, a parole violation for a previous conviction of second-degree robbery and a United States Marshals service hold.

Officers are looking to see if there are additions suspects, but police do not believe there is any threat to the public.

Police blocked off several nearby streets and sidewalks to investigate.

A witness, who was seen speaking with investigators on scene, told KATU News he witnessed the shooting. He said he was parked along the street and saw shots fired into the window of the parked car ahead of him. He said he hid as the two suspects ran by his car.

At the scene, Javier Ruiz said he heard seven gunshots.

"It sounded, at first, like a firework going off," Ruiz said.

At the time, he said he was about a half block away and saw two people, who he thought might be in danger, run towards him.

"It was kind of terrifying in that moment to see if they're running away from danger, but as soon as they saw the police car and they doubled back, we knew there was something more," he said.

Paul Murad was with Ruiz. The two said they helped police identify the suspect who was in custody, but Murad said the other person wasn't.

Anyone with any additional information is asked to call Portland Police Detective Vince Cui at 503-823-0449 or or Detective Brad Clifton at 503-823-0696 or

The victim's identity and cause of death will be released after the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office performs and autopsy.
