EUGENE, Ore. - A police office with experience managing a bike shop spotted a rider out without lights at 4:14 am. on a high-end full-suspension mountain bike - and figured out that something wasn't right.
The officer stopped Cassidy Moon Hatridge, 39, for a bike light violation at W. 7th Place and Seneca Road at 4:14 a.m. Saturday morning.
"Hatridge was riding a full-suspension mountain bike. Based on his previous experience with bicycles, the officer knew it was a high-end bicycle, and he also recalled reading a bulletin about one of the same brand that had recently been stolen in the Goodpasture Island Road area," Eugene Police said. "The officer also used his bicycle-days background during the investigation to ascertain the bike was the same one that had been stolen."
The officer developed probable cause to arrest Hatridge for Theft in the First Degree (Receiving), police said.
"The bicycle was returned to the victim," police said, "who was happy to have it back."
