Fatal two-vehicle crash on Hwy 58 kills 7-year-old boy

A two-vehicle crash on Highway 58 killed a seven-year-old boy, injured several others on Saturday.

LANE COUNTY, Ore. — Oregon State Police are continuing to investigate a fatal crash that took place on Highway 58 in Lane County on Saturday afternoon, which resulted in the death of a seven-year-old boy.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., troopers from the Springfield Area Command responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash near milepost 57 on Highway 58.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a gray 2006 Dodge 1500 pickup, operated by Douglas Nelson, 35, from Troutdale, was traveling eastbound when he lost control for an unknown reason. Nelson's vehicle crossed into the path of an oncoming westbound, blue 2006 Honda CRV, operated by Ashely Russell, 27, from Veneta.

Nelson and his passenger, Erica Nelson, 30, from St. Helens, were uninjured in the crash.

Russell was traveling with Zachary Heineman, 28, their seven-year-old son, and 15-month-old daughter, all from Veneta. Russell and Heineman's son suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

Russell, Heineman and their daughter were transported to Riverbend Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Nelson is cooperating with the investigation, and it appears that alcohol nor intoxicating impairment was a factor in the crash. All occupants in both vehicles were properly restrained with safety belts and child safety/booster seats.

Highway 58 was closed completely for approximately two hours, but all lanes have been reopened as of Sunday.
