'Leaven No Trace': Man beautifies Coos County by picking up over 10 tons of trash

NORTH BEND, Ore. -- In just two months a local man has single-handedly picked up more than ten tons of trash around Coos County and he says it's just the tip of the iceberg.

He's the man behind 'Leaven No Trace' and he's out seven days a week.

Raymond Block, founder of Leaven No Trace has been piling up trash along the roads in Coos County.

"It's heartbreaking," he says.

He says he knows of at least 50 illegal dump sites where he finds mountains of plastic bottles, used syringes, and even an old car hood.

"If mankind has created it, I have found it," says Block.

He says tires are the most prevalent piece of trash he finds and also the most problematic.

So far he's collected more than 1200 tires, 800 of them coming from a site on 7 Devils Road.

He says the tires can deposit toxins into the environment and they make a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

"It was a mosquito city," Block said, "and the amount of rats that were here ... there were some as big as dogs."

Block says it's the most disgusting job he's ever done but also the most fulfilling. After college he spent a year studying the geography of the U.S., searching for the richest diversity of plant and wildlife.

He landed in Coos Bay, and now he's made cleaning it up his full-time job.

"It's just a beautiful fairy tale forest and right now it's getting covered with trash. It's a catastrophe."

The county will help take the first 10 tons of trash off his hands but he says volunteers and supplies are badly needed.

"Somebody needs to do something, and I'm going to."
