ROSEBURG, Ore . -- Sergeant Gary Klopfenstein has been with the Roseburg Police Department for almost 10 years.

In two months he can call himself the chief of police.

"I've worked with a lot of people," Klopfenstein said, "I've forged a lot of partnerships, and to be able to lead this department going forward is humbling and I'm grateful." [Duration:0'08"]

Klopfenstein began his career as a patrol officer, worked with the narcotics team and then became sergeant.

Now, he's excited for his new role as chief.

"I love meeting people and working with others and I just love networking and finding resources and getting things accomplished."

And Klopfenstein wants the community to know he has some goals in mind.

"Continue with transparency, community involvement is gonna to be really important, and of course customer service. We have to have good customer service."

Even if he didn't always think he'd be chief.

"I knew I wanted to be a police officer and I just wanted to chase bad guys and do what kids want to do. As you get into the career and start progressing up, you realize it's about helping people."

Klopfenstein will officially begin as chief of police on July 1.
