COOS BAY, Ore. -- A section of fence surrounding the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery was damaged when a school bus crashed into it last week.

The Reedsport bus was accidentally driven into the fence Thursday evening.

The fence itself was initially built to stop vandalism..

Over the last three years, grants and donations helped fund the project, which was near completion when the accident happened.

The cemetery was primarily used from the 1880s to the 1920s.

"Most of the important people like, if you look at street names, they're all buried here," says cemetery volunteer Cricket Soules. "We have nearly a hundred veterans from different conflicts buried here, including over 60 Civil War veterans."

The Reedsport School District will cover the estimated $2,000 in damage.
