CHARLESTON, Ore. -- The traditional December 1 opening of the commercial Dungeness crab season will be delayed by at least two weeks to give the crabs more time to fill with meat, officials said.

According to fisheries managers, meat fill tests help determine how well the crab have rebounded from the late summer shedding of their shells.

There will be another round of testing late this month or in early December.

The results will determine if the season will open on December 16.
